Another Great Year, Another Honourable Nomination!

Mason Homes is now in its 50th year of business, and we have built our reputation on quality. Our homes are designed to be amongst the most energy efficient and sustainable homes on the market.

At Mason Homes, we take pride in what we do. We understand that your family wants to live a comfortable, healthy life. Our Green for Life homes provide a happier, healthier environment for you and your family.

This year we’ve been included as a finalist for the 5th annual EnerQuality Leader of the Year award, which will be handed out on Feb. 3, 2011 during a luncheon celebration at the Blue Mountain Inn & Resort.

EnerQuality is a partnership between Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance and Ontario Home Builders’ Association. Last year, the award was won by Building, Industry, Land and Development and Toronto’s 2010 mayoral candidate, George Smitherman.

As last year’s winner of the Green Builder of the Year award, we continue to improve our green brand through new innovations and a continual learning process. We’ve earned recognition as one of the best in the industry and are proud to continue doing so.

It is an absolute honour for all of us at Mason Homes to be included as a finalist for EnerQuality’s Leader of the Year award. Thanks to everyone on the Mason team for your hard work!

A New Year’s Resolution You Can Keep!

Every New Year, we all make resolutions we try to maintain throughout the year, striving for a better change in ourselves. What did you have on your list last year? Were you able to keep it?

This year, living a more sustainable lifestyle is on my list. There are always ways to be greener and leaner than last year. I do this not only for my own health but also to help create a better world and a brighter future for my children. Living sustainably is not as complicated as you may think, and it definitely has a lot of benefits for you and the world.

Starting with these sustainable lifestyle tips can help you live long and healthy as well:

  • Buy food and fruits that are organic and locally grown/produced
  • Recycle everything you can: paper, plastics, bottles, etc.
  • Make sure your home is equipped with energy efficient appliances (if you already live in a Mason Homes Green for Life home, you’re laughing!)
  • Stop using plastic and reduce your use of paper – do you really need to print that email?
  • Reduce how much you drive and take public transit when you can
  • Use green products and support green businesses

Why not make living greener your 2011 goal?

Taking Green Home Building to the Next Level

At Mason Homes, we put a lot of effort and thought into how we can improve ourselves: how to build better, greener homes, and how to improve our homeowners’ comfort and lifestyle. Since we’re always trying to get better, we’re always on the lookout for new ideas, and are always learning more about the best and brightest innovations in the building industry.

To those ends, I just attended the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida, put on by the National Association of Home Builders. This event is a great place to get inspiration, and to help us keep up to date on the newest ideas in the business. With educational sessions taught by industry leaders and hundreds of the industry’s most respected suppliers on hand to share their newest products and ideas, this event was an invaluable resource. Lots of great new ideas for 2011!

Keep expecting the best Green for Life homes for you and your family in the coming year.

Stay warm and drive safe this winter!

How to Stay Green this Winter

Even though the holidays are over, winter has only just begun, so we still have a few more months of cold weather ahead of us. Staying warm during these cold months can be costly, and especially after all your spending over the holidays, you should watch your hydro and gas bills!

Having Energy Star appliances installed in your home can help you save plenty throughout the year, but during the months of winter it’s wise, not only to your wallet but also to the environment, to watch your heating system. Here are five quick easy tips for you from Mason Homes to follow:

Make sure your thermostat is set at 20° Celsius (68° F) during the day and if you leave the house for more than four hours or before you go to bed, set it to 13°C (55° F).

  1. If you have thermostat controls, you can close off rooms that do not need heating.
  2. If you are using the fireplace, make sure to turn down the heater.
  3. Be sure to clean your furnace and change the filter regularly.
  4. Layer up when you’re inside your home, so your body is kept warm and cozy.

Stay warm and make the most of your already energy-efficient home!
