Family Fun in Barrie

02/18/2011

It’s Family Day this Monday, Feb. 21st and I’m excited to spend some time with my family this long weekend. What do you have planned with your family?

On Saturday, February 19th, our friends at the Canadian National Home Builders’ Association are holding the 6th Annual Ice Fishing Tournament at Kempenfelt Bay in downtown Barrie. This will be a great family event, like every year, with over $50,000 in prizes to be won at the tournament!

Register for the tournament here.

Barrie has many great things to offer. You can spend the rest of your weekend shopping, dining out, or enjoying other outdoor activities (like snowmobiling, tobogganing, or snow tubing). Barrie is a friendly town, and JUST4U has been receiving a very warm welcome. We’re having a special event next Saturday, so be sure to visit then as well!

Have a happy family weekend, everyone! Hope you get to spend some quality time with your family or your loved ones this weekend.

Valentine’s Day: Green is the New Red

02/11/2011

Recently, homeowners started moving in to their new townhomes at Just4U in Barrie, and I can’t help but notice the passion and the love that I see in the young lovebirds here. Just4U’s stylish homes were built to be modern love nests, and we used a hot and racy ad campaign – and our purchasers loved the theme. I bet the new homeowners are really looking forward to Valentine’s Day this year!

Every year, millions and millions of cards, chocolates, and flowers are purchased and enjoyed around the world. When purchasing something special for a loved one, you can also support your love for the environment and help your children to a brighter future. Many popular Valentine’s Day gifts are eco-friendly. Some ideas to get you ready for Monday:

  • Cards: purchase cards that are made from recycled materials, tree free paper, or get creative and create your own from used materials.  For people far away, consider sending an e-card.
  • Chocolate: purchase chocolates or other sweets that are fair trade and/or organic.
  • Flowers: flowers that are grown locally and organically are better for the environment.
  • Gift ideas: consider purchasing simple romantic gifts, like a gift certificate to a massage or health spa, before purchasing unnecessary non-eco friendly products like a stuffed teddy bear that might end up in the trash. For more green gift ideas, click here. (I love the idea of planting a tree for your loved one. Might have to wait for the spring on that one!)

Love is a universal language that can be expressed through various actions. Living in a green home, like the red-hot designs at Just4U, and making our world greener together, will make our love everlasting. Be green and spread the love. Happy Valentine’s Day!

We Did It Again!

As I mentioned last week, I was included as a finalist for EnerQuality’s Leader of the Year award this year, and I am happy to announce that I just won the award! I wish to thank all the homeowners that have purchased from us.  Thank you to all of the hardworking team at Mason Homes, all our great suppliers and our marketing team at BAM for their hard work. We look forward to another exciting year of green homebuilding as we turn 50 this year!

Tech It Up in Green!

02/03/2011

Computers have become a part of our everyday life. We use them every day, at work and at home to catch up on current events, share ideas and connect with others.  Since they’re a big part of our lives and they consume energy, here are some tips to green your computer:

  1. Purchase a Mini Power Minder to kill standby power (also called vampire power), energy consumed by electricity when switched off. The Mini Power Minder will cut off all energy from the computer when it senses that the computer is off.
  2. Upgrade all your computer hardware (and possibly any other electronics in your house) to Energy Star qualified products. Read the labels and find out more information when you’re purchasing a new computer.  Keep in mind that LCD monitors typically use less than half the energy that traditional cubical screens (CRTs) do.
  3. Be sure to change the settings on your computer to conserve as much energy as possible.  Most computers nowadays come with an “Energy Saver” profile, which helps you save energy while using them. Also, dimming the brightness of your monitor will help reduce energy consumption.

Please consider these ideas when you’re using or thinking about purchasing a computer. Do your part and help make our world greener! Your energy bills will thank you too.
