Although everyone has good reasons to look forward to a long weekend, chances are those of you who have a families of your own relish the opportunity to spend more time with your loved ones.

Our award-winning community Avonlea is home to many families. And since it’s located in Peterborough, which hosts great Canada Day events, those of you who own an Avonlea home have many options this long weekend.

Consider some of the activities taking place on Sunday:

  • 10 am to 4 pm: the annual Multicultural Canada Day celebration is hosted by the New Canadians Centre at Del Crary Park
  • 1 pm to 3 pm: the Douro Library holds its annual Big Book Sale and Family Fun Day
  • 11 am to 5 pm: the annual DBIA Hunter Street Canada Day Party takes place with family fun fair, crafts, and live music.

Now I turn it over to you: what are your plans for the long weekend?

Mother’s Day Events Close to Some of Our Communities

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar Mother's Day Brunch

Mother’s Day is almost here, and while many of you will likely be eating pancakes made by the kids on Sunday morning, or taking your mother out for dinner, you might still find the following list useful, as it contains events taking place close to some of our current communities.

Barrie (home to our Just4U community)

Beaches, a fine market grill, will offer brunch and dinner on Sunday. Dinner consists of a four-course menu as well as the Beaches’ popular Prime Rib Feature.

Where: 268 Bradford Street
Contact: 705-728-3000 and beaches@beachesbarrie.ca

Port Hope (home to our Port Hope Golf & Country Club community)
There will be a Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk in the Ganaraska Forest from 2 pm – 3:30 pm, to be followed by hot tea. (Call 905-885-8173 to register.) Also, this article offers great suggestions on how to spend Mother’s Day in Port Hope.

Peterborough (home to our Avonlea community)

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough will host both an online auction and a Mother’s Day event at Lansdowne Place. The latter will allow kids to create unique hand-painted flowerpots, with proceeds going to the 2012 Women Build Project.

Now it’s your turn: what are your plans this Sunday?

Farmers’ Markets You Should Visit in Peterborough

04/27/2012

One of the best things about spring is the fact that farmers’ markets begin opening up everywhere.

Peterborough is no exception. Home to our award-winning Avonlea community, this great town has more than its share of great farmers’ markets.

Consider this list:

  • Peterborough and District Farmers’ Market: This one is open year-round, but will only come outdoors and away from the heated indoors area on April 30th. This weekend, it will host an event called MapleFest Pancake Breakfast. I don’t know about you, but the name alone makes me want to go!

Hours: Saturdays from 7 am to 1 pm

Location: the Morrow Building & Parking Lot at the Corner of Lansdowne Street and Roger Neilson Way

Hours (from May 2 to October 3): Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

Location: the Louis Street Parking Lot (on the corner of Charlotte Street and Aylmer Street)

Feel like exploring the towns nearby? This blog post lists a few options, such as the Lakefield Farmers’ Market, a short distance from Peterborough.

If you happen to go to one of these markets and haven’t purchased an Avonlea home but are curious about our community, drop by for a visit at our Sales Office, located at 1224 Chemong Drive. (Hours are Mondays through Fridays from noon to 7 pm and weekends from 11 am to 6 pm.) You can also call 705-741-3676 for more info.

These Simple Earth Day Tips Will Benefit You as Well as the Planet

04/20/2012

Did you know Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22nd?

In fact, on that day events will be held in over 175 countries. Their aim? To increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment.

Having blogged last year about this important date (and having already linked to this page where you can find related events in your area), I’d like to talk about the simple steps that will preserve the environment and provide immediate, measurable benefits for your family and you.

  • If you already own a Mason Home, you’ve already taken a big first step. Our Green for Life program ensures you preserve energy (which saves you money), plus it provides your loved ones with great indoor air quality and helps you lessen your dependence on your car.
  • Using plug-in kettles rather than stovetop ones will help reduce energy consumption.
  • Buying local food also brings about positive consequences for the earth (reduced energy consumption) and for you (fresher, more nutritious, more delicious food). I often tweet about farmers’ markets. (Hint: follow me here.)

What are your favourite tips? I’d love to hear about them!

Earth-Friendly Events This Weekend in Peterborough

03/30/2012

Having blogged last week about Earth Hour, which is taking place worldwide tomorrow evening, I was pleased to learn that Peterborough, home to our award-winning Avonlea community, takes this event seriously.

I guess we couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate city for our green community.

The first event, suitably called Earth Hour 2012, takes place this Saturday from dusk until midnight. Hosted by the Peterborough Astronomical Association, it will allow visitors to view the moon, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter by telescope.

night sky

This is an annual event that costs nothing to attend. What’s more, your kids are likely to love it. So if you want to show them what an impact turning the lights off can have on stars’ visibility, among many other things, be sure to take them here.

Peterborough restaurants also play a part, offering dining by candlelight. As for local schools, they encourage children to participate by asking them to sign up online and showing them the importance of turning off their lights, TVs, computers, and other equipment.

Don’t Miss This Exciting New Event at Port Hope Golf and Country Club!

Red Wine Setup

What better way to enjoy this than with friends?

If you moved to a Mason Homes community, chances are you know there is more to life than locking the door behind you when you get home. Like-minded people live around you, and your community was designed so that it’s easy for you to mix and mingle, should you be so inclined.

With that in mind, this Saturday we’re holding a Valentine’s Day event at our Port Hope Golf & Country Club community. Called A Rose for Every Rose, this event isn’t limited to your or your neighbours — indeed, feel free to bring as many friends as you like.

So if you’d like to socialize this coming Saturday at 4 pm and enjoy some complimentary wine and cheese, please RSVP today at porthope@masonhomes.ca.

Family-friendly Event this Weekend in Peterborough

01/27/2012

If you live in our Avonlea community in Peterborough, this weekend is a perfect time to have fun with your entire family. Why? Because that’s when the ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival kicks off.

Avonlea is a new homes community in Peterborough

There may be a bit more snow now, but Avonlea homeowners still prize community involvement and family-friendly activities.

Opening tonight at 7:30pm with a film about how bicycles can change the world, and followed by a live performance about the first woman to bike around the world, ReFrame provides a great framework to educate and entertain the family.

And while the festival aims to celebrate the latest works of film and video from local, national, and international filmmakers, it doesn’t eschew younger members of your family, as it includes programming for both children (REELKids) and teens (Changing Our World).

So if you feel like watching something that you wouldn’t catch at your average commercial theatre, check the ReFrame website for scheduling and ticket information.

Have you been to a previous edition of the ReFrame festival?
