Happy Holidays in a Mason Home

What I’m about to say may sound cheesy, but I’ll say it anyway: at Mason Homes, we’re happy when our homeowners are happy.

This is why we build homes that are perfect for you to raise your family — a Green for Life home that is EnergyStar-qualified as a standard rather than an upgrade, and a home that, being environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, will help contribute to your family’s healthier living environment.

This weekend, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, chances are most of you will be happy. Happy you are together with your loved ones. Happy you have some time off. Happy you’re enjoying good food and drink. Happy (I hope) that you live in a Mason Home.

For that, I thank you and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

What Makes a Home Green?

The answer to this question is not as simple as you’d think. But I don’t want to bore you with details about international certifications and green technologies and agreements and so forth.

Instead, I’ll briefly discuss what makes a Mason Home green. We’ve worked very hard at coming up with what we think are the best ways to make our homes environmentally-friendly, and the result is our unique Green for Life program, which gives you a green, healthy home.

With our Green for Life program, you get:

1. Homes that are EnergyStar qualified. As you most likely know, EnergyStar is an international standard for energy efficiency that ensures a reduction in energy consumption of about 30%.

We achieve this through superior insulation, high-performance windows, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. The best part? Unlike many builders, our homes are EnergyStar qualified as a standard and not as an upgrade. We’ve very proud about this.

2. Green Communities. We always try to make sure our communities have ample neighbouring parks, as well as pedestrian-friendly streets and enough nearby resources to allow you to reduce car usage.

We also do our best to preserve the existing landscape as much as possible, and to plant native species that require less watering.

3. The best air quality. We offer high-quality air filters and heat recovery ventilation systems to improve indoor air quality, as well as low-VOC paints, sealants, and adhesives to reduce harmful gas emissions. You and your family deserve to breathe pure air.

4. Better water conservation. With our low-flow faucets, showerheads and toilets, you’ll not only use less water, but also lower your water bill.

As always, I’m interested in your opinion. Leave a comment below or contact me on Twitter at @MasonHomes.

Big Turn Out for Port Hope!

Last Saturday, the opening of our newest community, Port Hope Golf & Country Club, was a big success! There was a big turn out for the event, and it was great meeting our potential buyers and our neighbours, the current residents of Penryn Village.

At Port Hope Golf & Country Club, we’re offering Green for Life homes and retreat-style living. We want this community to be all about having the time to enjoy your life, to kick back your feet and enjoy the soundtrack of your life.

At our opening last Saturday, we invited Jericho’s Wall from Peterborough to play in front of our sales centre. Visitors were entertained with classic rock tunes, and enjoyed great food, beer and wine catered by This Little Piggy (and ice cream waffle cones!).

It was great to see everything finally come together: Port Hope’s cool sales centre and the beautifully decorated model home. We’ve combined music and technology into the sales process, so visitors can use innovative touch screen monitors to filter and find the home design that best suits their needs. Once potential homebuyers have registered themselves via an iPad, they got to select their favourite song from a playlist to be played throughout the sales centre (how cool is that!?).

We had a great afternoon in Port Hope! We’ve been working very hard on this new community for a while now, and it’s exciting to see it finally moving into the next phase!

I’d like to thank those who came out and supported us, and everyone on my team who’ve worked very hard thus far. If you haven’t had the chance to visit our sales centre, what are you waiting for?

Port Hope Golf & Country Club Opens This Saturday!

A couple of weeks ago, I updated you on our newest community in Port Hope, which is opening this weekend!

It’s always a journey getting a community ready for sale, and it gets more exciting with each community for us at Mason Homes, as we continue to build homes that are Green for Life, better for you and the environment.

Port Hope is located not too far from the City of Toronto, just an hour’s drive.

If you haven’t been to Port Hope before, it’s a friendly small town that promotes an active, vibrant and healthy lifestyle. There are many outdoor activities you can enjoy on your own, or you can join one of these community recreation and leisure activities. There’s so much to do in this charming town, from shopping and visiting art galleries to dining out at one of the many restaurants in town.

Port Hope Golf & Country Club is unique and different from our previous communities, offering retreat-style living for active adults, so you can relax and enjoy life. Port Hope Golf Course is located right by the community, so you can simply step out your front door and tee off. And there are countless other things to do nearby, from visiting nearby parks and conservation areas to exploring the trails and pathways in the area, or of course heading into the vibrant town centre for some adventure.

This Saturday is our grand opening, and we’re hosting a BBQ in Port Hope! Come by our sales centre at 415 Lakeshore Rd. in Port Hope to join us for some food and music. The BBQ will run from noon until 2pm. You’ll also have the chance to visit our brand new decorated model and to meet your new neighbours. See you there! You can RSVP on Facebook here.

More Green Homes on the Way

Things have been moving along quickly here, as we are preparing ourselves for the hottest summer for Mason Homes. We announced the good news about our newest community in Port Hope last month, and we’ve also moved forward with Avonlea’s second phase, The Playground at Avonlea.

Our sales centre and model home at Port Hope Golf & Country Club are closer and closer to being complete. Our anticipated opening date is June 25.

In the Port Hope sales centre, we’re doing something different than we’ve ever done before; we’re really embracing technology! We’ve integrated touchscreen monitors and iPads into our presentation, so you’ll be able to navigate and peruse the home designs, and register yourself via an iPad. We’ve created an interface, so you can select and filter through the designs and find the home design that best suits you.  For more details, register yourself here or drop by our sales centre later this summer!

Please feel free to drop by to either location later this month and see why our green homes and green communities are better for you!

Windows: More Important Than You Think!

This past week in southern Ontario, we got our first heat wave, with a near record high of 32 degrees Celsius. It was definitely a nice break from the long rainy weather we’ve been having. Did you enjoy it? Last week, I provided tips on saving energy during the hot months, but it’s also important to take note of the windows in your home.

Windows can be the most attractive part of your home, as they offer outside views and sunlight into your home. Windows are an important feature of your home, especially when it comes to being energy efficient. Energy efficient windows can reduce your heating and cooling bills, letting you save more money and help the environment too!

Have you ever what makes a window energy efficient? Here are some of the features, courtesy of Energy Star, that improve your home’s energy efficiency:

  • Low-Emissivity (Low-E) glass has a unique coating to reduce heat and contains a tint that allows it to absorb as much as 45% of the incoming solar energy and reduces heat gain throughout the home.
  • Reflective Glasses are coated with a reflective coating that helps control solar heat gain during the summer.
  • Glass Layers and Air Spaces Standard are unlike single pane glass windows which have very little insulation and contribute to heat loss and gain. Double or triple pane windows have insulated air or gas-filled spaces between each pane that resist heat flow and transfer less heat, although they are costlier.
  • Framing is also important when it comes to adding energy efficiency in your home. A variety of framing materials are available. Frames can be made of a single material or made with a combination of different materials such as wood, aluminum, clad, and vinyl. Each framing material has its advantages and disadvantages.

If your home isn’t energy efficient or if you’re looking to upgrade your windows to energy efficient ones, the easiest way is to look for the Energy Star logo on the windows. You can also look at the manufacturers’ label for U-value and R-value on the windows. The higher the R-value and the lower the U-value, the more efficient your windows will be in keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

For more info, you can check the ratings of all Energy Star qualified windows, doors and skylights as rated by Natural Resources Canada, and to learn more about buying new energy efficient windows, please read the consumer’s guide.

Environment Canada has predicted a long hot summer coming this year, so keep yourself cool and make sure the cool air doesn’t leak out of your home. If you’re going to turn on the air conditioner, remember to close all your windows tightly!

Lastly, don’t forget to get outside and stay active this summer!
