Mother’s Day Events Close to Some of Our Communities

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar Mother's Day Brunch

Mother’s Day is almost here, and while many of you will likely be eating pancakes made by the kids on Sunday morning, or taking your mother out for dinner, you might still find the following list useful, as it contains events taking place close to some of our current communities.

Barrie (home to our Just4U community)

Beaches, a fine market grill, will offer brunch and dinner on Sunday. Dinner consists of a four-course menu as well as the Beaches’ popular Prime Rib Feature.

Where: 268 Bradford Street
Contact: 705-728-3000 and

Port Hope (home to our Port Hope Golf & Country Club community)
There will be a Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk in the Ganaraska Forest from 2 pm – 3:30 pm, to be followed by hot tea. (Call 905-885-8173 to register.) Also, this article offers great suggestions on how to spend Mother’s Day in Port Hope.

Peterborough (home to our Avonlea community)

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough will host both an online auction and a Mother’s Day event at Lansdowne Place. The latter will allow kids to create unique hand-painted flowerpots, with proceeds going to the 2012 Women Build Project.

Now it’s your turn: what are your plans this Sunday?

Parks Canada Marks A Hundred Years

As summer is slowly approaching us, everyone is gearing up for outdoor activities. I recently dusted off my bike and pumped up my tires, getting into gear for the season. Now camping season is about to kick off, giving you even more reason to be outdoors enjoying nature!

This week, Parks Canada celebrates its centennial anniversary, which means we’ve had a hundred years of conservation, storytelling, and wowing visitors and residents alike with the amazing natural spaces we’re lucky to have all across Canada.

Parks Canada is the world’s first national parks service in the world (Go Canada!), and it currently protects 167 national historic sites, 42 national parks and 4 national marine conservation areas. To celebrate its 100th year anniversary, Parks Canada will be hosting events throughout the year, starting off this Saturday at the CN Tower in Toronto. If you’re closer to the Trent-Severn Waterway, like our homeowners at Avonlea in Peterborough, the historic site will be open as of this weekend as well, and check out their celebration, the Just Add Water festival, in Port Severn next weekend.

This season gives you the perfect opportunity to visit one of the 42 national parks and explore the wilderness wherever you are in the country. Get out your camping gear and make the most out of your summer this year!

Follow @ParksCanada on Twitter to get updates on events and tell CBC which Canadian park is your favourite, and you could be featured on their interactive map.

Avonlea is the Place to Grow!

The most prestigious awards for the new home building industry, the BILD awards, were handed out last Friday, and we took home one of the most anticipated awards of the night! Our community in Peterborough, Avonlea, won the award for Places to Grow Community of the Year for its forward-thinking planning, a combination of smart growth and new urbanism with green building initiatives.

The Places to Grow Act helps the Ontario government plan for growth in a coordinated and strategic way. We’ve created a community that helps sustain a robust economy, uses land and resources efficiently, and promotes a healthy environment. Walkability is one of the main principles of new urbanism, so Avonlea was designed to include all necessities within walking distance so you can walk to school, work or shops.  It’s great to be able to take public transit, and to live a more active lifestyle by walking or biking, instead of driving everywhere. The new urbanism principles help us create a sustainable community that provides an enhanced quality of life for you and your family.

It was a great evening at the 31st BILD Awards, and it was a great occasion to see everyone in the industry. I’d like to thank and share this award with MBTW Watchorn Architect Inc., MHBC Planning, Cole Engineering and BAM Builder Advertising & Marketing.

Many parks and parkettes are seen at Avonlea for families to enjoy quality time together.

Spring Gardening

The days are getting longer, and the weather’s getting warmer – it’s almost time for gardening season! Get your gloves and all your gardening tools out and get ready for some fun.

Gardening has many benefits, other than just making your home more beautiful. It can also keep you healthy! Gardening is a great way to get some exercise and stay fit, and it also gives you some time in the sun soaking up vitamin D and calming your mind. You’ll benefit hugely if you decide to grow fruit or vegetables in your garden as well – whatever you grow will taste better than what you buy off the supermarket shelves, and will be chock full of nutrients.

If you live in Peterborough, the Garden Show is coming up soon! Dubbed the biggest and best gardening show in Ontario, the Peterborough Garden Show is held annually, with over 150 vendors and exhibitors expected this year. The show includes garden lecturers, informative demonstrations and a flower competition, and will be held on April 8-10 at the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough.

If you live at our Avonlea community, make sure to take advantage of this great event, so you can make your garden and your lawn as beautiful as the home you’ve dreamed of. Make your beautiful green community even greener and enjoy all the benefits that gardening offers this spring!

A New Gem! New Design Studio Coming to Peterborough

Now that we’re about to kick off phase two of Avonlea, we’re excited to inform you that we’re also building a new Design Studio in Peterborough! The new studio will be located in a beautiful historic building in the downtown area of Peterborough.

We’ve been building homes in this area for the past forty years, and the new Design Studio will be a lot more convenient for all the homebuyers at Avonlea, Port Hope Golf and Country Club and our upcoming new home community in Cobourg, to ensure that your home is tailored to suit your needs and your style.

At the Design Studio, our professional Design Consultant will walk you through every step to help you build the home you’ve always dreamed of! The new location will be open late spring/early summer this year.

The framing stage is nearly complete at the Design Studio. It may look like a construction zone now but once completed, the new space will look amazing!
