Mother’s Day Events Close to Some of Our Communities

05/11/2012

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar Mother's Day Brunch

Mother’s Day is almost here, and while many of you will likely be eating pancakes made by the kids on Sunday morning, or taking your mother out for dinner, you might still find the following list useful, as it contains events taking place close to some of our current communities.

Barrie (home to our Just4U community)

Beaches, a fine market grill, will offer brunch and dinner on Sunday. Dinner consists of a four-course menu as well as the Beaches’ popular Prime Rib Feature.

Where: 268 Bradford Street
Contact: 705-728-3000 and beaches@beachesbarrie.ca

Port Hope (home to our Port Hope Golf & Country Club community)
There will be a Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk in the Ganaraska Forest from 2 pm – 3:30 pm, to be followed by hot tea. (Call 905-885-8173 to register.) Also, this article offers great suggestions on how to spend Mother’s Day in Port Hope.

Peterborough (home to our Avonlea community)

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough will host both an online auction and a Mother’s Day event at Lansdowne Place. The latter will allow kids to create unique hand-painted flowerpots, with proceeds going to the 2012 Women Build Project.

Now it’s your turn: what are your plans this Sunday?

Parks Canada Marks A Hundred Years

05/20/2011

As summer is slowly approaching us, everyone is gearing up for outdoor activities. I recently dusted off my bike and pumped up my tires, getting into gear for the season. Now camping season is about to kick off, giving you even more reason to be outdoors enjoying nature!

This week, Parks Canada celebrates its centennial anniversary, which means we’ve had a hundred years of conservation, storytelling, and wowing visitors and residents alike with the amazing natural spaces we’re lucky to have all across Canada.

Parks Canada is the world’s first national parks service in the world (Go Canada!), and it currently protects 167 national historic sites, 42 national parks and 4 national marine conservation areas. To celebrate its 100th year anniversary, Parks Canada will be hosting events throughout the year, starting off this Saturday at the CN Tower in Toronto. If you’re closer to the Trent-Severn Waterway, like our homeowners at Avonlea in Peterborough, the historic site will be open as of this weekend as well, and check out their celebration, the Just Add Water festival, in Port Severn next weekend.

This season gives you the perfect opportunity to visit one of the 42 national parks and explore the wilderness wherever you are in the country. Get out your camping gear and make the most out of your summer this year!

Follow @ParksCanada on Twitter to get updates on events and tell CBC which Canadian park is your favourite, and you could be featured on their interactive map.

Green Expo in Peterborough

04/28/2011

A lot of times people don’t realize how simple it is to live a little greener. Little things like Energy Star appliances, for example, help save energy but they also help save money on energy bills. If you’re interested in learning more about living a little greener and you’re in the Peterborough area, check out The 8th Annual Green Expo this Saturday April 30th.

The Green Expo at the Evinrude Centre showcases green products, services and technology from local businesses and it’s also got some pretty cool guest speakers lined up, like CBC’s Bob McDonald. This year’s Green Expo is expected to be the biggest and the best one to date, with extended hours, new exhibitors, new sponsors and activities for all ages all day long. For only $7 per person, you can gain a lot of new knowledge from workshops and guest speakers scheduled for the event.

The best thing about the Green Expo is that, unlike other trade shows, all the proceeds including exhibitors’ fee and sponsorship money will go towards the local community and Peterborough Green-Up, a local not-for-profit environmental organization.

I bet there’s a new thing or two we could all learn at the Expo that could make our lives greener and probably save us a little money along the way!

If you or someone you know would like to lend a hand at the event, you can also volunteer for the event by signing up here.
